Help with barcoding for Tesco

Help with TESCO barcode labelling within the UK

Axicon Labels are frequently being asked to provide support and expertise for producers who are unsure of the labelling requirements expected by Tesco.
This is usually because because the goods have been labelled outside the UK by printers unfamiliar with the EAN.UCC specifications and the codes fail to meet the 'Verification' grades expected.
Or it can often be suppliers who have not had to barcode their products before and wish to make sure that they have the correct codes that 'scan first time every time'.

The 'Basics and Principles of the EAN.UCC System' can be found on the GS1 (UK) website, and there is no better source for this barcode information. It can, however be a little daunting so Axicon Labels has produced a help guide, or 'aide memoir', for printers and producers needing helpful information on barcoding their products & packaging in the manner required by Tesco.
It is important to remember that this information supports rather than replaces the International EAN.UCC barcode standards and is solely intended to "point you in the right direction". It will also provide 'Links' to the appropriate GS1(UK) section.

If, when you have read through the guide, you still feel that your questions are unanswered please do contact us directly on labels@axicon.com or by telephone or fax.
During normal working hours the Axicon Labels bureau service provides a free and informative barcode information service.

The first two ‘Solution Providers’ meet GS1's Standards

Axicon Labels, a Division of Axicon Auto ID, is proud and very pleased to announce that we have been awarded accreditation to the GS1 "Solution Provider Programme". This award demonstrates our dedication and expertise to the barcoding arena.
We have reproduced, below, the press statement released by GS1.

"Axicon Auto ID is one of the first two members of the e.centre solution provider community to prove their knowledge of the only open ‘global barcoding system’, and shown that their systems and solutions are fully compliant with it.

The EAN.UCC System comprises a suite of standards, from barcoding to electronic business communications. It underpins many business processes, generating in excess of five billion transactions daily, across a wide range of sectors including retail, healthcare and defence.

It is crucial that solution providers fully understand how each element of the EAN.UCC System fits together. Over 16,000 organisations use the System in the UK, with many of the major retailers demanding that suppliers use it in order to be allowed to trade with them. In addition it provides compelling business benefits for users, including; increased efficiency through automation, greater productivity due to improved inventory control, increased sales by reducing out of stock situations, traceability and increased customer satisfaction.

To encourage a comprehensive understanding of the EAN.UCC System e.centre launched the first phase of the ‘Solution Provider Accreditation Programme’ specifically for barcoding. Becoming e.centre accredited requires the provider to invest both time and money. The benefits, in return, being competent delivery of EAN.UCC complient solutions and the Kudos of fully understanding and supporting the only open global standards for supply chain efficiency.

Axicon Auto ID signed up for the accreditation programme alongside six other companies at the launch in September 2003 and have worked hard to gain this status.

Staff have had to undergo two levels of training, each followed by an examination. The EAN.UCC foundation course gives participants a broad overview of the numbering system, barcode basics, electronic messaging, global data synchronization and the emerging technology Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The advanced course gives participants detailed rules for creating and verifying barcodes.

Following completion of these stages the business operation undergoes a formal and comprehensive EAN.UCC quality management process audit, conducted by e.centre. Sample barcodes are verified to ensure they are in line with EAN International and Uniform Code Council standards, and Company references are sourced and checked."

2005 Sunrise

Executive Summary

Since the introduction of the 12-digit Universal Product Code (U.P.C.) more than 30 years ago, the use of the GS1 System has expanded rapidly to facilitate global commerce. To meet the need for improving commerce efficiency, GS1 US and GS1 Canada announced an important initiative, requiring that by January 1, 2005 all U.S. and Canadian companies must be capable of scanning and processing EAN-8 and EAN-13 symbols, in addition to 12-digit U.P.C. symbols, at point-of-sale. GS1 US and GS1 Canada announced this initiative, named “2005 Sunrise,” in 1997 to allow U.S. and Canadian companies ample time to address all conversion issues.

We are now beyond the deadline of the 2005 Sunrise initiative, and to be compliant, systems and applications within your company should include the capability of receiving and processing EAN-8 and EAN-13 symbols and numbers in addition to the U.P.C. at point-of-sale.
